Our proposal for the comprehensive renovation of the Ca ses Monges building stems from the approach to the site’s urban values. The group of buildings to be intervened in maintains the urban structure typical of Llubí, with a deep parcel layout and the perpendicular building attached to the street, leaving a large space at the back of the building.
The strategy we propose is based on incorporating this empty area into the urban fabric, creating a sequence of high-quality public spaces for the citizens of Llubí. These will complement the public programs of library, Day Center, and Youth Space, while generating a new meeting point and a connection with the landscape of Pla de Mallorca. The organization of the program has also been carried out respecting the structural division of the existing buildings in order to facilitate the phasing of the intervention.
The Day Center (phase 1) is located in the former chapel and complemented with a new building that occupies the footprint of the existing sheds. This new block allows for a direct relationship between the Day Center and the rear garden, as well as the creation of an independent service access at the back of the building.
The Library (phase 2) is placed in the center of the plot, directly connected to the new square and generating the access passage from the street to the complex. The reception area is located on the ground floor, while the different reading areas are on the first and second floors, from which the distant views of the landscape can be enjoyed.
The last bay is designated for the Youth Space (phase 3), removing the deteriorated intermediate slab to achieve sufficient height that allows for the most flexible space possible. It will also have its own access through the passage and a direct connection with the square, which will act as an extension of this space.
